Who Loves How Pompano Beach Might Be the Next Big Thing?

by Dawne Richards

Yes, this is actually a question, and the answer very much depends on who you ask.

In many ways, it's the classic battle between old and new, longtime residents vs newcomers (or, as some people put it, carpetbaggers), people who are excited about all of the changes and people who are horrified.

I've been in Pompano Beach for a pretty long time, and have watched this "sleepy little beach town" grow by leaps and bounds. But I also remember how awesome it was in the 1960s, and how not-awesome it was by the end of the 1990s.

"Cities either grow or decline; there is no standing still." I remember hearing this from someone years ago, and it certainly rings true. Very few places stay exactly the same.

Whatever comes next, I know this: we are now, in many ways, officially on the map, as noted in this recent Realtor.com article, "Florida's 'Sleepy Fishing Village' Gets a $2 Billion Makeover as Luxury Buyers Swoop In."

If you're driving down A1A south of Atlantic Boulevard, it's impossible to miss the new Ritz-Carlton Residences, or the Waldorf Astoria Residences, just a stone's throw from each other.

Local neighborhood social media sites are full of passionate debates about the advantages and disadvantages of all of this.

But does this mean that these are the only places you can live and still get a taste of the salt air? Absolutely not. There are still plenty of places all up and down the barrier island where some old-school Florida charm still exists.

One thing is for sure, though: change is coming.

Got questions about the Pompano Beach housing market? Naturally, I'd be happy to answer them!

See you in South Florida! - Dawne
